Teen Health & Hygiene

From taking charge of their personal grooming to managing their stress and making sure they get enough sleep, the angsty teen years bring on a whole new set of health issues. How do you keep your child happy and healthy?

Is there a ”nervous” tween stage I should have known about? (6 posts)

My 9 1/2 year old has started this new thing where she rubs her pinky and ring fingers together on both hands, and doesn’t realize she’s doing it. She also has a hard time standing still, and lightly taps her feet repetetively. I have asked her is she is worried about anything, or if there is something she is nervous about but she says everything is fine.

This is a brand new development, and I am not sure what to do. Should I ignore it? Gently remind her to stop when she does it?

My daughter is a very sweet and happy kid. She has gone through a big stress in her life with almost losing her father to a serious chronic illness but that resolved over a year ago after a transplant, and her daddy is healthy again. She has nice friends, is smart, sociable, active in sports and attends private Christian school.

Any advice or support is greatly appreciated!

My son had a bunch of nervous habits at about that age. It worried me. But he got over all of them.

Oh yes! My son started blinking alot, then he started sucking on his bottom lip, and the most recent is this weird eye thing he does, but all has gone away….started when he was 11…..I actually thought he had OCD, or Turrets, worried to death all the time, but now, youd never know he ever did any of the nervous twitching, or habits…just make sure she knows she is doing it and remind her when she starts, the doctor said to us that ignoring it sent him the message that it was okay to start nervous habits, and that he would never stop himself when starting if it was being ignored, good luck dear!

Thank you both! I feel much better knowing I am not the only one who is experiencing this- and that it goes away. <3

Just an update on this one- she isn’t doing this nearly as much as before. I told her that if it was something she felt she COULD control then she should stop because it made her look very nervous and unsure of herself. It took effort on her part, and she would tell me, “Mommy, I’m not doing that thing anymore.” With effort, parise and time it looks like she’s beating it :)
