How do you keep yourself from snacking all day? (10 posts)

Mindless eating and stress snacking are big contributors to weight gain. It’s hard to control your cravings and say “no” to between-meal munching, but it can be done. What’s your best strategy to keep yourself from constantly eating? Or if you graze, what healthy snacks have you found to be effective in keeping the pounds off?

I try to make sure that I drink a lot of water all day. When I am feeling peckish, I’ll drink a glass and wait 20 minutes. Then if I’m still hungry, I try to reach for a piece of fruit or carrots & hummus as a snack. If I’m craving something sweet, I’ll have a banana with a little bit of peanut butter or a small piece of dark chocolate. What does everyone else snack on when you absolutely MUST?

I drink water all day, too, and make sure I always have healthy snacks nearby: bananas, carrots, etc. I also try to make my meals healthy but substantial with a good balance of whole grains and protein.

Oh, bananas area a GREAT idea! I just bought a bag of apples and some cherry tomatoes. They’re nice and sweet so I can pop them into my mouth like berries and they are SO yummy this time of year.

I am a fan of keeping fruit handy, too. Bananas. Apples. Grapes. I definitely find I will Eat What I Have, for better…or worse. If I have fruit, I’ll eat it. If I have chips, I’ll eat them. So the secret is to have the fruit. I buy on Monday morning to carry me to midweek and then on Wednesday to get me to Friday. It works for me.

I try to eat something healthy but satisfying–i.e., with some fat. One of my favorite snacks is a couple slices of Wasa Crispbread with a Laughing Cow wedge (all those new yummy flavors) spread in between. Add a apple, pear or grapes, and I’m set for a good long while.

I am a huge fan of Laughing Cow wedge cheeses, too! And I have found that buying them in multiples at BJ’s offers extreme savings versus buying at the supermarket. They keep well in the fridge. (BJ’s in my local bigbox but I assume it’s the same deal at Costco and Sam’s.) A couple of wedges on flatbread with Boar’s Head Ham or Turkey is the ideal panini. I am addicted to my panini press, the Giada one from Target.

I make sure I am stocked up at home with healthy foods and don’t buy the things that tempt me. Make sure the healthy foods and cut, cleaned and ready to grab when you need. Baby carrots, grape tomatoes, I also like Laughing Cow. Combine a bit of fat free greek yogurt and a teaspoon of your favorite low fat salad dressing for a quick dip too.

I love making salsa, hummus and guacamole on a Sunday so that I have it all week in my fridge; then I enjoy these dips with whole grain crackers, lettuce wraps and baked sweet potato fries!
