Love Your Heart Month: Tip #1

Every day I do something to strengthen my heart. And that’s not just because I’m the Health Director here at Family Circle. It’s because I know that cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death in this country, but there’s plenty I can do to fight it. Some days that means lacing up my sneakers and hitting the treadmill—then I actually get on and run a few miles. Other days it’s about taking the time to whip up a healthy meal using extra virgin olive oil or, yes, enjoying a nice glass of red wine.

This month, we’re inviting you to do something different every single day to love your heart. Come back to the site every morning in February for an easy tip that will improve your cardiovascular health. Today we’re giving you two!

First, while you’re embracing that most-important muscle in your body, see how it’s doing right now. The American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women Heart CheckUp is a quick and easy way to find out where you stand.

Then, zen out with this tension-taming idea below.

And whenever you see a tip you love, don’t forget to tell a friend. Helping two hearts is better than one!

Tip #1: Take It To The Mat
Yoga’s relaxing stretches can reduce levels of stress hormones in your body and lower your heart rate. Start the day with a sunrise DVD or head to a class on your lunch break.
