DIY Magnet Sets

Crafting with Suzonne

I seem to always run out of magnets, which might have something to do with the fact that life and parenting come with so much paper. But that doesn’t mean I have to settle for the latest magnetic ad I received in the mail. Instead, I make my own using packs of wooden discs that I pick up from the craft store. I like to leave mine unfinished and I stamp them with rubber stamps. Afterwards, I glue a strong magnet to the back and let it dry. That’s it.

They also make cute gift sets and since I was in the mood for red this week, I went ahead and made a set for Valentine’s Day as well. I’ll package them in a muslin bag that I also stamped. But you can create any theme or color scheme you desire and there are lots of wonderful rubber stamps out there, in every style imaginable (see one of my favorite resources listed below).

If  my unfinished style is too utilitarian for you, you can paint the discs before you stamp them, using acrylic craft paint (either full strength for an opaque finish or diluted with water for a color wash that allows the wood grain to show through). If bulletin boards are more your style, glue tacks to the backs of the discs instead of magnets.

What You’ll Need:

Flat wooden discs
Rubber stamps
Inkpads
Ceramic magnets or tacks
Strong glue (I use Beacon 527)

1. Stamp your images on the discs and let them dry for an hour or two.

2. Glue a magnet or tack to the back; let the disc sit face down until the glue has fully cured (check glue label for appropriate time frame).
